ASLEF

ASLEF wanted to improve their web presence, and allow stakeholders online access to the union's membership database. The Union also wished to improve the quality of information that was provided to stakeholders, and create a member-only area to support this.

We agreed to help ASLEF frame a proposal that would not only cover the technical upgrade required, but also the shaping of a strategy that would ensure that the new website could be launched with a high quality of web-content and a suitable national roll-out programme that would ensure that the site achieved it's success criteria.

A detailed Project Initiation Document (PiD) was created detailing all of the requirements the site needed to fulfil and how the membership database integration would work, as well as a project delivery timetable. This involved negotiation with the membership database providers and an evaluation of un-tested software.

Having completed and agreed the PiD, a very detailed functional specification was completed and design treatments were developed. Once this was agreed, the site was then developed, ASLEF staff were trained and it went live in December 2006

As part of the launch, ASLEF has established a programme of regional training events designed to encourage officers and staff to use the new website to access union and membership information, improve communications between different levels of union activists, seek opinions and update items of interest simply and quickly.

Keith Norman, ASLEF's General Secretary, says, "I am sure this new development will play a major part in improving our union's information flow, transparency and efficiency."
